I’m Nicky Thomas and I have been a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine since 1999. I currently practice at York Natural Health in Acomb, which is a centre for natural health care. As well as running a busy Clinic in York, I also enjoy providing practical and academic tutoring to students, who are doing a three year degree course in Chinese Medicine, both within the Teaching Clinic and Classroom, at the Northern College of Acupuncture. The course teaching that I deliver includes Pain Management, Rheumatology, and Embodied Mindfulness and Movement.
I began my four-year study of Chinese Medicine in 1996 after my interest was kindled by a visit to China. I was drawn to its natural, sustainable and holistic approach and emphasis on prevention and lifestyle changes. I am passionate about offering people different perspectives to healthcare having been inspired by the Chinese model where Western and Chinese medicine approaches are integrated in a positive way to help people regain health and balance.
I’m dedicated to making the experience of having acupuncture one in which you have time to be listened to and understood, and feel supported through the physical and emotional challenges that you may be facing. After all these years of practicing, I'm still inspired by how the insertion of very fine needles, and other treatment modalities, can bring about such profound and life-altering changes in a person’s energy, sleep, stress and pain levels.
Teaching yoga and qi gong allows me to integrate my passion for helping people to improve their quality of life and well-being, but via movement and mindfulness. Although a different kind of mind-body practice, it is one that, like acupuncture and acupressure, helps us to relax and open up tense and constricted areas, and feel stronger emotionally and physically.
I have recently completed a course in integrated somatic trauma awareness, and I’m currently in the process of undertaking a 3-year course in hypnotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling. I’m looking forward to be able to weave hypnotherapeutic approaches (and later psychotherapy) into my acupuncture practice in 2024.

Acupuncture
Did you know?
Pain Management
Acupuncture is widely known for its effectiveness in the treatment of pain. Its unique role in reducing suffering in patients experiencing pain is one of the main reasons it has become so popular around the world. The research is plentiful on the effects of acupuncture on specific painful conditions. Acupuncture has developed an established reputation for offering a safe and effective option in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
Stress & Anxiety
According to the most up to date evidence, acupuncture is an effective treatment for anxiety. Acupuncture has been shown to improve the body’s ability to cope with stress. One of the ways that it does this is by increasing the release of endorphins, the body’s own ‘feel-good’ chemicals, which play an important role in the regulation of physical and emotional stress and anxiety responses.
Women's Health
Acupuncture has a long history of treating gynaecological problems, such as menstrual pain or infertility. A well-functioning reproductive system, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, should pass without too much pain or a particularly heavy flow.
